Curriculum
Our family medicine residency programs will train you in the full scope of family practice skills. As a resident at our Harlem, Mid-Hudson or Mount Sinai Downtown programs, you’ll provide care to patients of all ages using the principles of the “patient-centered medical home,” and will gain competency to practice in a rural setting or in the inner city. You’ll gain experience with team based practice and in using the Institute’s award-winning electronic health record system (Epic). You’ll participate in population health management of patients in different settings, using advanced health information technology to improve your patients’ overall quality of care. Training is achieved through a combination of direct patient care opportunities, structured didactic experiences, and community based collaborations in accordance with ACGME guidelines.
Most importantly, you’ll receive expert training in areas of importance to underserved communities, including:
- Community-oriented primary care
- Management of chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and HIV/AIDS
- Women’s health care and reproductive health services, including gynecology and family planning
- Integrated mental health care, including substance abuse treatment
- Psychosocial and cultural aspects of health
- Community-based health care (e.g., school based health centers and homeless shelters)
- Racial and ethnic health disparities
- Team-based care and care coordination
- Group prenatal and diabetes visits
- Managing visits through our patient portal website
- Use of mobile technology
These themes reflect the changing role that providers must play as they become active participants in primary care medical homes and accountable care organizations, and use information technology and information exchange in creative ways to improve health care delivery to our communities.
Weekly and monthly structured didactics include faculty lectures, resident-directed teaching and learning, case-based presentations and discussions, an evidence-based medicine curriculum and a Balint group (view sample schedules here). You’ll also participate in scholarly activities throughout the three years of your residency.
