Dr. Demetre Daskalakis Presents Grand Rounds on May 8th

NEW YORK, NY  (May 4, 2015) – Demetre C. Daskalakis, MD, MPH will present the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health’s May Grand Rounds. His presentation, entitled “PrEP and the Prevention=Treatment Continuum,” will address how to identify individuals who may benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), how to better make decisions about PrEP initiation and potential uses for episodic risk; and how to design a clinical strategy for initiating and following patients on PrEP.

Dr. Demetre Daskalakis is Assistant Commissioner of Public Health over the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Prior to taking this post in September of 2014, Dr. Daskalakis served as Medical Director of Mount Sinai’s ambulatory HIV services. Outside of his clinical work, he also founded the Men’s Sexual Health Project, where he provided HIV testing to the highest risk men in New York City in sex clubs and bathhouses. He has been recognized locally and nationally for his work to provide meningitis vaccination during an outbreak in 2013 among gay and bisexual men in New York City. In 2013 he was featured as one of OUT magazine’s 100 most compelling people of the year. Dr. Daskalakis also serves on the Antiviral Advisory Committee for the United States Food and Drug Administration.

As part of the Mount Sinai Health System’s virtual campus, videoconferencing will be offered with the Beth Israel Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine and the Mount Sinai-affiliated Mid-Hudson Family Practice Residency in Kingston.

The event will be held from 8-9am on Friday, May 8th in Mount Sinai’s Hatch Auditorium in the Guggenheim Pavilion (1468 Madison Avenue), 2nd Floor. A light breakfast will be served at 7:45am.

Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Grand Rounds are supported with a generous donation from the Steven A. and Alexandra M. Cohen Foundation. They are open to all and occur on the second Friday of every month throughout the year.
