The Institute Files Comments on Proposed “Public Charge” Rule

On December 10, 2018, the Institute for Family Health submitted comments on proposed changes to the so-called Public Charge rule. The proposed changes, published by the federal government in October, would change how immigration applications are reviewed, such that people who had previously accessed health care, health insurance or other benefits might be less likely to be granted permanent residency in the United States. We are deeply concerned that the proposed regulation will prevent individuals—including our patients—from accessing needed care for themselves and their families. As a result, they will face higher medical bills and poor health.
