#NHCW15 Photo of the Day: An Alternate Model of Prenatal Care

August 10, 2015

New York, NY (August 10, 2015) – This week is National Health Center Week and for each day, we will feature an photo from our archives.  Today’s photo comes from one of our CenteringPregnancy™ groups.  Below, Margaret Walsh, FNP measures a patient’s belly size during a Centering Pregnancy group visit.

CenteringPregnancy™ brings women out of exam rooms and into groups for their care. Women receive a clinical exam and nutritional assessment with their healthcare provider. Following the initial visit, they are invited to join with 6-10 other women with similar expected dates of delivery for group self-care activities. The group meets every month for the first four months and then every two weeks. Partners or family members can also attend. Participants discuss topics of interest related to pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, breastfeeding, and personal growth. In addition, women participate in self-care activities, including measuring their own blood pressure and weight, entering data on their personal tracking chart, and completing self-assessment sheets. Women who participate in Centering Pregnancy are not only more satisfied with their care, they tend to have healthier pregnancies and healthier babies!
